How to use the VPN, the easy way

In a few minutes you can protect your connection on your phone or computer. Follow the steps below — no tech knowledge needed.

What is a VPN?

It's a secure "tunnel" between your device and the internet. Anyone on the same network (like public Wi-Fi) can't see what you access.

What is it for?

More privacy, safe use of hotel or airport Wi-Fi, and browsing as if you were in another country.

Is it safe?

Yes. We never store your IP, timestamps or visited sites, and your device key is created in your browser.

Choose a plan (or start the free trial)

Create your account and pick a plan. In the dashboard, open the VPN service and choose the country you want to "exit" the internet from.

Install the WireGuard app and add your device

WireGuard is the free app that connects your device to our VPN. Pick your system:

1Install the WireGuard app from the Play Store (it's free).
2On your computer or phone, go to the modtool dashboard › VPN › Add device and tap Generate configuration.
3In the WireGuard app, tap the + button and choose "Scan from QR code".
4Point the camera at the QR code shown in the dashboard and give it a name (e.g. My phone).
5Tap the switch next to the name to turn it on. The first time, accept the VPN connection request.

On a phone, the easiest way is to scan the QR code shown in the dashboard.

Get the app

Turn it on and use it as usual

With the tunnel on, everything you do online goes through the VPN. Use your apps and sites as always.

To turn it off, just tap the same switch in the WireGuard app. You can turn it on and off whenever you want.

Want to use it on another device? Add a new device in the dashboard for each one (phone, laptop…).

How to know it's working

With the VPN on, open a "what is my IP" website (e.g. search "my IP").
The country shown should be the exit location you chose in the dashboard.
Turn the VPN off and check again: the country goes back to yours. If that happens, everything is fine.

Something didn't work?

I turned the VPN on and the internet stopped

Turn the tunnel off and on in the app. If it continues, check in the dashboard that your subscription is active and the exit location is "Online". Still no luck? Remove the device and add it again.

The internet got slow

Speed depends on the chosen country and on your usage this month (heavy users have their speed adjusted so others aren't affected). Try an exit location closer to you.

I lost my phone or changed devices

In the dashboard, remove the lost device — it loses access immediately. Then add the new device.

I want to use it on one more device

In the dashboard, click Add device and repeat step 2 on the other device. Each plan allows a number of devices at the same time.

How do I turn the VPN off?

Open the WireGuard app and switch the tunnel off. To remove it for good, delete the tunnel in the app and the device in the dashboard.

The country shown isn't the one I chose

Some sites remember your old location. Close and reopen the browser (or use a private window) and check again.

Glossary

Words you'll see in the dashboard

VPN: A protected connection between your device and the internet.
Exit location: The country (and city) you "exit" the internet from. Websites see this location, not yours.
Device: Each phone, tablet or computer you connect. Each one gets its own configuration.
Data allowance: The amount of internet traffic included in your plan every 30 days.
